I’ve won Arts In Fife’s Artist of Merit Award 2017!!!

Wow. Just wow

So a couple of weeks ago, I was looking through my emails at breakfast when I saw one that looked more interesting than my usual Facebook notifications. I opened it and could hardly believe my eyes. I passed my phone to my significant other.

“I think I’ve won an award.”
“Wow, well done. How did you do that?”
“I’ve no idea.”                       “Wow.”

The email was from Stuart Russell, a Fife born artist who set up Arts In Fife in 2013 to give local artists a platform to discuss their work. His website says “The Arts In Fife award celebrates the highest calibre of creativity happening in Fife, aiming to promote confidence, and encouraging individual artists to shine”.

Ha. The highest calibre of creativity no less!

I emailed Stuart back straightaway to accept the award, then sat waiting for his returning email to inform me that he’d mucked up and emailed the wrong person. We all know this can happen; even at the highest level (#oscarcockup). I told no one and tried to put it the whole thing out of my mind.

Apparently it wasn’t a mistake and my award arrived in the post a few days later.

Woohoo!

It’s now two weeks since I first heard about winning the award and I still grin hysterically to myself whenever I think about it.

I struggle to deal with receiving extravagant praise. I’m extraordinarily proud of this achievement, but I’m far more likely to make a joke out of the whole thing than believe the hype. As I said on a Facebook post about the award: this is only the second award I’ve ever received. The first award was for ‘Best Adaptation of School Uniform’ when I was 15. I still thinks that award can sum up my life – a bit rebellious, doesn’t like being told what to do, creative, hates navy.

Stuart Russell interviewed me in 2014 to discuss my I Love Scolawi project. The interview can be heard here. https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/stuart-russell/arts-in-fife/e/42864431 I’m on 2 min 30 sec in, but the rest of the show is great and definitely worth listening to as well. In fact the whole series is fab and I’m re-listening to them again as podcasts.

In other news, my website is finally (all but) ready at www.jennigudgeon.co.uk . Huge thanks to Fiona from Unavoided who’s done all the work. Please feel free to have a look around and search for errors. I’ll send a free greetings card to anyone who finds a mistake.

Enjoy x
