This summer I started selling etching kits, so anyone can try their hand at etching into photographs. These haven’t quite made it onto my website yet, but will make great presents for arty types who are interested in trying out new techniques. The kits sell for £8 and consist of one photo (8.5×25.5cm) Which I used to etch a Folkland Fable creature on to, a paper copy of the photo, a paper example of what I etched onto the given photo, a small photo to practise etching on, an etching tool, a paint brush, and full instructions. Having done the hard sell, I’d now like to apologise for not sending any updates for a while and explain why.
I mentioned in my last update that my mum was seriously ill, and as many of you will be aware, she died at the end of July. We were expecting it, but the reality was still quite a shock. Mum was in the early stages of dementia, so we take great comfort in knowing she (and we) were spared the horror of the latter stages of the disease.
She spent her last weeks in a nursing home in Glenrothes. We visited her daily and often took her out round the local area in the glorious weather we had this summer. She recognised us to the end, and died surrounded by her own furniture and paintings rather than in a hospital ward. I think we made her last days as good as we could. This picture is from a few years ago on her 70th birthday; a wee while before we first noticed any memory problems
In between Mum’s death and her funeral, I decided to go ahead with my exhibition at the ten day Pittenweem Arts Festival. You won’t be surprised to hear that the day after the funeral I pretty much collapsed with exhaustion.
I had over a month off, where I spent lots of time reading in bed. This was a wonderful therapy for me. Since then I’ve been taking it easy and trying to be nice to myself. I started a three week writing workshop in September that I’ve almost finished. I’ve etched a couple of small pictures of my fairytale characters – just for fun and to keep my etching hand in. Here’s the shellycoat going to her secret place behind a waterfall (20x20cm).
And for the last few weeks I’ve been going to life drawing classes to improve my drawing. This has been so much fun, and the two hour sessions just fly by. I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to Monday mornings quite as much as I do at the moment.
I’m also finally ready to start promoting Folkland Fables. This week I had a highly informative session with my wonderful writing mentor Sarah Painter to learn all I could about marketing books online. There’s a lot of things I need to do, but I’ll be the next J K Rowling before you know it!
